ASDA Jobs for Local People

LATEST NEWS - Asda has today submitted a planning application to East Renfrewshire Council

26th September 2012

Dear Mr Murphy,

ASDA submits proposals for Barrhead

I am delighted to inform you that Asda has submitted a planning application to East Renfrewshire Council for a 25,000 sq. ft. supermarket in Barrhead.

Over the past few months Asda has been shaping its proposals by consulting with the local community on its plans, including the community council and chamber of commerce. During this period Asda held successful community engagement events at the Barrhead Sports Centre on 28

th July and 25th August, with over 150 local residents in attendance, and has received 156 responses to its proposals. 98% of these gave their backing to the store proposals, with 94% supporting more supermarket choice in Barrhead. A full copy of the pre-application consultation report is available on: www.asdabarrhead.co.uk.

The store is proposed to be sited on land which borders Church Street, Main Street and Levern Water. And if approved it will bring hundreds of new employment opportunities to the town and provide more consumer choice, quality produce and Asda’s famous low prices to the people of Barrhead.

This is the latest development to re-ignite the town’s regeneration and follows news of a £3.8 million extension to Barrhead Sports Centre to create a new leisure and learning centre, Barrhead Steps.

We will endeavour to keep you updated as the proposals progress but please do not hesitate from contacting me in the meantime should you have any immediate questions or concerns.

ASDA Stores Ltd

28th August 2012

I recently revealed new figures which show that there are 16 umemployed people in Barrhead for
every job in the town.

With such a serious jobs crisis, it's only right that as many as possible of the 200 new jobs that could come with the proposed Asda development go to Barrhead residents.

I have written to the Council to ask that they make ASDA doing their bit for Barrhead jobs a condition of granting the planning permission for the development.

I'll also be out on Main Street over the next month asking residents to sign up and support the Labour Party's campaign for 'ASDA Jobs for Barrhead People.

Jim talks about his campaign for 'ASDA Jobs for Local People'

From the Barrhead News 28th August 2012

JIM Murphy has flung his weight behind efforts to make sure that ASDA jobs go to Barrhead jobseekers.

Last month the first of two public consultations was held in which ASDA claimed that 90 percent of over 80 people who attended approved of the plans, however there are growing concerns amongst residents and local businesses worrying that ASDA will sap customers from local shopkeepers, and outsource employees from other areas.

Now Jim Murphy is stepping up his campaign to make sure that the jobs go to local people and priority is given to local jobseekers.

Jim said: "1 recently revealed new figures which show that there are 16 umemployed people in Barrhead for every job in
the town. With such a serious jobs crisis, it's only right that as many as possible of the 200 new jobs that could come
with the proposed Asda development go to Barrhead residents."

Two weeks ago the 'News reported on the worrying figures that were revealed by research done by Jim into Barrhead's unemployment figures, and as Scotland's unemployment continues to fall, Barrhead's continues to rise.

The shadow defence secretary has now beseeched the council to make sure that the 200 full time and part time jobs that will be generated by ASDA go to Barrhead jobseekers.

He said: "I have written to the Council to ask that they make ASDA doing their bit for Barrhead jobs a condition of granting the planning permission for the development.

"I'll also be out on Main Street over the next month asking residents to sign up and support the Labour Party's campaign for 'ASDA Jobs for Barrhead People'."

Now the second ASDA public consultation is due as ASDA continue to try and drum up local support for their plans for a new £20 million supermarket. The event will provide the public with an opportunityto view the proposed site layout and artist's impressions of the store, encouraging feedback on these. Asda representatives will also be on hand at the events to give further details about the proposals and answer any questions.

Lisa Rooke, Asda's Property Communications Managerfor Scotland, said: "Asda places a strong emphasis on community engagement and as we move the store proposals forward we are keen to get as much input as we can from the local community in order to shape these. If our planning application is successful this will enable us to make a significant investment in the town, regenerating a currently redundant site, and generating up to 200 new jobs for local people." . If the application is approved, ASDA WIll set up Its "ASDA Magic" Recruitment Centre in Barrhead to target local job seekers, making sure that the focus on employment opportunities is local - giving people in the area the best opportunity of landing a role in the store.ASDA also claims that they hope to keep local businesses in the loop, and have a minimal impact on local trade.Lisa said: " We've already had a positive meeting with the East Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce to discuss our proposals and are now keen to engage with as many local businesses as possibIe’.
